Where Should an Aquarium Go at Home?
The structure decides first, then the eye. A full aquarium weighs several hundred kilos, so a flat, solid floor close to a load-bearing wall or column comes first. Then choose a wall that is seen from where you spend most of the day, out of direct sunlight.
- Living room wall: The most common choice. The middle of the aquarium should sit at eye level from the sofa.
- Room divider: Between the living and dining area or a study, viewed from both sides.
- Under the stairs and alcoves: Made-to-measure for awkward spaces; service access must be planned.
- Study: A small planted aquarium rests the eyes between screens.
Avoid sunny windows, the space right next to radiators and air-conditioning vents, behind doors and next to cupboards that open often.
Why Plan It During a Renovation?
Planned before the renovation ends, not a single cable or hose shows. At that stage we agree on a dedicated circuit with an RCD, sockets above the water line, a nearby tap and drain, and for built-in tanks the service void and ventilation behind.
Weight and Floors
A litre of water weighs about 1 kg. With glass, sand, rock and the cabinet, a 300-litre aquarium can exceed 400 kg. Residential floors in Türkiye are typically designed for a live load of about 200 kg/m² (TS 498). For large volumes we check the floor, beams and columns during the survey and ask for a structural engineer’s opinion when needed.
Which Type of Aquarium for a Home?
| Type | Who it suits | Care |
|---|---|---|
| Planted | Those who want a quiet, natural look | Weekly, including trimming |
| Freshwater community | Colourful fish with less care | Weekly; every two weeks if you do the change in between |
| Marine / reef | Corals and colourful marine life | Weekly |
Holidays and Time Away
A week away is no problem for a well-set-up aquarium. For longer trips we add an automatic feeder and move the service visit to fit. Optional temperature and water-level sensors can send an alert to your phone if a value drifts.
